NIPER is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with proclaimed objectives of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. The institute is located at S.A.S.Nagar (Mohali), Punjab.
The main objective of the Institute are:
-Toning up the level of pharmaceutical education and research by training the future teachers, research scientists and managers for the industry and profession.
-Conduct the continuing education programmes.
-Creation of National Centres to cater to the needs of the pharmaceutical industry and other research and teaching institutes.
-Collaboration with Indian industry to help it meet global challenges.
-National/International collaborative research.
-Curriculum and media development.
-Study of sociological aspects of drug use and abuse and rural pharmacy, etc.
-Running programmes in drug surveillance, community pharmacy and pharmaceutical management.
Presently, seven different Departments i.e. Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmaceutical Analysis have become functional. The teaching programme and research activity have also started in the various Departments. The first batch of doctoral students was admitted in January,1998. The Institute faculty also provides consultancy to different houses.
